Combustion Engineering was founded in 1912 and is known for developing fossil and nuclear steam power supply systems throughout the United States. Combustion Engineering also was a manufacturer and distributer of boilers, cement, insulation, adhesives and asbestos coatings. Combustion Engineering was originally headquartered in New York City, but moved its headquarters to Stamford, Connecticut in 1973.

Combustion Engineering

Combustion Engineering initially manufactured industrial boilers, stokers and dryers. Combustion Engineering improved railroad locomotive steam engines and created and supplied coal pulverizing equipment for coal-fired boilers. Between the 1930s through the mid-1970s, Combustion Engineering used asbestos in some of its products. This included its welded boilers, which utilized asbestos parts due to their heat and pressure resistant properties.

Combustion Engineering started to make its own asbestos products in the mid-1960s. This included insulation and cement. However, Combustion Engineering still acquired some of its asbestos products from other companies, like M.H. Detrick Company and Johns-Manville. Combustion Engineering’s asbestos products were also used in shipbuilding. Shipyards used Combustion Engineering’s insulation and cement. Combustion Engineering built asbestos-lined boilers for Liberty Ships during World War II.

Many occupations were at risk of exposure to Combustion Engineering’s asbestos products. These occupations include boiler makers, construction workers, machinists, maintenance workers, refinery workers, power plant workers, railroad workers, shipyard workers and more.

In the mid-1960s the first asbestos-related claims against Combustion Engineering were filed. In 1989, ASEA Brown Boveri Group (ABB Group) acquired Combustion Engineering. Subsequently, in 2003, ABB Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on behalf of Combustion Engineering due to the number of asbestos-related claims. A Combustion Engineering personal injury trust was created in 2005, and it continues to receive and pay out asbestos-related claims today. This trust recognizes many worksites in the Western New York area including the following: Dupont, Durez, American Standard, Spaulding Fibre, Niagara Mohawk, Union Carbide, Allied Chemical, Ford Motor Company, Eastman Kodak, RG&E and General Electric Company.
