Astoria Powerhouse (sold in August, 1999) – Astoria, NY – Astoria Generating Station is a 1,090-megawatt natural gas and fuel oil power plant located in Astoria, a in the borough of Queens, New York City.  The Astoria Generating Station origin dates back to the 1950’s when it first began providing power to a growing population in New York City and the surrounding areas.  As a result, there were five units built on the property. Astoria Units 1 and 2 were built in 1953 and 1954, and the remaining Units 3, 4 & 5 were constructed between 1958 ad 1962.  Three of the units are dual-fueled (natural gas and oil), while another is natural-gas fueled.  Since that time, Units 1 & 2 have been retired. Astoria Unit 6 (now referred to as Poletti) was sold to the New York Power Authority in 1977, and it continues operation to this day.  As part of a restructuring plan approved by the New York Public Service Commission, Con Edison divested its electric generating capacity in New York City to foster a competitive wholesale electricity market, and its in-city electric generating facilities were divided into three bundles, each purchased by a different buyer.

A new six-mile-long renewable energy line has recently gone into operation as of May 2023.  This new line, along with the installation of a new infrastructure at the Con Edison substation in Astoria will help retire the older peaker plants, which are fossil fuel power plants located along the Astoria/Long Island City waterfront (which has been nicknamed “Asthma Alley”) which emit high emissions levels of carbon dioxide and other pollutants. This new line has enabled the closure of the NRG Energy power plant at its Ditmars section of Astoria as of May 1, 2023.

Con Edison is also adding two additional renewable energy lines that are planned to be completed by 2025 – — one in Brooklyn and the other in Staten Island.  These lines will add an additional 600 megawatts to New York City.  These three projects form part of the company’s Reliable Clean City Project, an $800 million investment in green energy infrastructure that aims to deliver hundreds of megawatts of energy to residents.
