Many of our clients and families often ask, “What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a deadly form of cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs, abdomen, and other vital organs of the body. The only known cause of this disease is asbestos, which is a fiber that cannot be absorbed by the human body.  In the video below, experienced asbestos exposure attorney Michael A. Ponterio explains mesothelioma and how our law firm can help if you or a loved one was exposed to asbestos and developed mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma predominantly affects the outside lining of your lung called the pleura. It also can affect the outside lining of your heart, called the pericardium, or the outside lining of your abdomen called the peritoneal cavity. There are four primary places where mesothelioma can be centered. These include:

  • The lungs (pleural mesothelioma)
  • The abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma)
  • The heart (pericardial mesothelioma)
  • The testes

While the last two are quite rare, each goes through four distinct stages: Limited, localized, generalized, and full-body affliction.

This is cancer caused by direct, secondary, and environmental exposure to asbestos.
