Consolidated Edison – Arthur Kill Powerhouse (sold in 1999) – Staten Island

The Arthur Kill Generating Station is located on Staten Island, Richmond, New York. It is an 878-megawat operating gas-fired power station, that was commissioned in September 1959, and it is a Steam Turbine Power plant.

The original Arthur Kill Generating Station dates back to 1948, when Staten Island Edison built the  25-megawatt Arthur Kill Unit 1 and started operation. Because it was mostly a rural area at the time, the Verrazano-Narrow Bridge had not yet been built.  Staten Island Edison merged into Consolidated Edison in 1952, when plans were made to construct the bridge. The island’s population steadily grew after the bridge was constructed, and Con Edison constructed Arthur Kill Units 2 and 3 to meet the increasing energy needs.  Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises supplied steam boiler for the Arthur Kill Steam Turbine Generating Station (Arthur Kill Steam Turbine Generating Station Unit I). GE Power supplied steam boiler for the Arthur Kill Steam Turbine Generating Station (Arthur Kill Steam Turbine Generating Station Unit II).

On June 25, 1999, the 842-megawatt Arthur Kill Generating Station in the Travis section of Staten Island, and the 614-megawatt Astoria Gas Turbines in Astoria, Queens, were sold to NRG Energy Inc for $505 million.
