There are several types of mesothelioma. Below are a few of the most common forms of mesothelioma and asbestos-related diseases.

Pleural Mesothelioma affects the lining of the lung known as the pleura. This is the most common type of mesothelioma; and, according to the American Cancer Society, it accounts for over 75% of diagnosed mesothelioma cancers. This type of mesothelioma is rare in individuals under the age of 55. Its incidence increases with age, and three-fourths of individuals who contract this disease are over the age of 65.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma develops in the lining of the abdominal cavity. This form of mesothelioma is less common than pleural mesothelioma, accounting for only ten to twenty percent of diagnosed cases. Peritoneal mesothelioma is most likely caused by ingesting asbestos fibers.

Pericardial Mesothelioma develops in the membrane surrounding the heart known as the pericardium. This form of mesothelioma is extremely rare and very difficult to diagnose and treat.
