The law firm of Lipsitz & Ponterio, LLC is announcing a total of $3.15 Million in settlements on behalf of an Ithaca, New York man against several distributors and manufacturers of joint compound (mud). From 1962 to 1978, our client mixed asbestos-containing dry joint compound with water and applied it to wallboards. When the material dried, he sanded the joint compound, which generated a great deal of dust. After sanding the joint compound, he swept the residual material off the floor, which also exposed him to a great deal of dust.

Our client was not aware of the dangers of working with asbestos-containing materials during the 1960’s and 1970’s, as he preformed his duties without wearing a mask or respirator. Mixing, sanding and sweeping asbestos-containing joint compound gives rise to a great deal of asbestos dust and fibers.

In 2006 and as a result of his exposure to asbestos-containing joint compound, our client was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma at the age of 60.
